doctoral student in philosophy, Balliol College, Oxford; writer, the Times; columnist, UnHerd

John Maier is a journalist and junior academic. He is a doctoral student, working in analytic philosophy, at Balliol College, Oxford. He is a lead writer at the Times, and has a column at UnHerd.

In recent years, he has become involved with debates to do with free speech and academic freedom. In 2023, he wrote and organized an open letter, published in the Telegraph, defending the right of his fellow UnHerd columnist and philosopher, Kathleen Stock, to speak at the Oxford Union.

In 2025, he hosted an Oxford-based event with the campaigner Helen Joyce, which was protested and received attention in the national media. This year, he took up a position as a research scholar at George Mason University in Washington DC.
