Dr Taj Hargey
provost, Oxford Institute for British Islam

Dr Taj Hargey is an Oxford-educated historian and theologian specialising in African, Islamic and Middle East Studies in the United States and Britain. Aside from this primary academic focus, Dr Hargey also promotes an enlightened and egalitarian Islam. He is well-known for advancing fruitful interfaith dialogue between the Abrahamic religions. Currently, he is the provost of the new scholarly think tank and research academy, the Oxford Institute for British Islam.

Prior to this landmark project, Dr Hargey established the trailblazing Open Mosque in Cape Town, his birthplace. This is the most forward-looking and progressive Islamic house of worship in South Africa, boldly championing gender equality, non-sectarianism, philosophical tolerance, ideological debate and inter-religious harmony. In view of Dr Hargey’s visionary perspectives and intrepid scholarship relating to Islam, Muslims and cross-community relations in both the UK and South Africa, his articles appear in leading British and foreign newspapers. He is regularly interviewed on the BBC, Sky, Aljazeera, GB News and other major television and radio stations championing an authentic and inclusive Quranic Islam that encapsulates a pristine pluralistic faith that is compatible with transparent 21st-century democracy.
