Sibyl Ruth is an author whose work has been widely published. After studying English at Cambridge she combined writing with a variety of jobs. She has spent almost three decades teaching other people to write, mentoring, and doing editorial work.

Sibyl has also programmed events at a contemporary arts centre, carried out assessments for Arts Council England and served on the advisory panel of an independent publishing house. Her German-Jewish background makes her instinctively opposed to censoring artistic work. Nevertheless, for many years she rarely thought about freedom of speech. That changed in 2022 when her contract with a literature consultancy was effectively terminated because she dared to tweet about her lawful beliefs.
