Iain Macwhirter
columnist, The Times and Spectator; author, Disunited Kingdom: how Westminster won a referendum but lost Scotland

Iain Macwhirter is a columnist for The Times and the Spectator. Iain was a BBC lifer, who joined straight from university as a political researcher and spent the next 27 years working for the institution. He was a producer, then a political correspondent, and then a political presenter of programmes like the thrice-weekly Westminster Live and after 1999 Holyrood Live. He has been a columnist for the Scotsman, Observer, Herald and Sunday Herald and has written extensively for the New Statesman, Guardian and Public Finance among others. He is the author of several books including Disunited Kingdom: how Westminster won a referendum but lost Scotland which has been praised as “still the best book on the independence vote”. Iain is a former Rector of Edinburgh University.
