Dr Hamish Todd
mathematician; videogame programmer; creator, Virus, the Beauty of the Beast

Hamish Todd holds degrees in philosophy, computer science, molecular biology and mathematics. He has published peer-reviewed papers on computer animation, linear algebra, Islamic art and computational origami.

After several years working as a videogame programmer, Hamish joined Huawei and later Imagination Technologies, to work on the design of graphics processing unit (GPUs). These are the chips inside phones and laptops that allow them to run neural networks – that is, AI – and games.

A central goal of Hamish’s work has been using unconventional visualisation techniques to make complex ideas and specialist tools more accessible. An example is the website Virus, the Beauty of the Beast which allows users to manipulate visualisations of models from mathematical biology. More recently, Hamish has been independently creating an animation program for children.
