Fiona is the Survey and Interventions Director for XCEPT at King’s College London and a visiting researcher at Queen Mary University of London. Fiona carries out research that focuses on mental health and resilience in conflict affected and displaced populations in Lebanon, Iraq, and South Sudan, including longitudinal cohort studies, psychological interventions, and work that explores the cultural and contextual factors that influence the experience and assessment of mental health problems. She also carries out specialised autism assessments and her previous research has focused on autism and social development, autism in the context of genetic disorders, and autism screening and diagnostic processes.
Before embarking on a research career Fiona trained and worked as a veterinary surgeon, working primarily for the veterinary charity the PDSA. She has always been interested in the intersection between human society and animals. This includes the moral and ethical aspects of animal research – Fiona is a vice-president of the Institute of Animal Technology – and the link between cruelty to animals, child maltreatment and domestic violence.
