Dr Deborah Hayton
teacher; trade unionist; contributor, Spectator, Unherd and other publications

Debbie is a science teacher and a trade unionist. Originally from the north of England, she now teaches physics at a secondary school in Bristol. A firm believer in education, she thinks that schools need to be far more than mere exam factories. Knowledge is important, but children also need to be taught to think for themselves.

Debbie also writes regular columns for the Spectator and Unherd. She is not afraid to tackle the thorny issues thrown up in the transgender debate. After transitioning herself in 2012, she understands the nuances from first-hand experience. Her views are rooted in material reality: while we should not be limited by our sex, we cannot deny our sex. Debbie’s work has also been published by The Times, the Morning Star, The Economist and other places where rational debate is allowed and encouraged.
