Shelagh McNerney
independent built environment consultant

Shelagh is currently working for Manchester City Council on a range of development schemes. She has led multiple teams of investors, property experts, planners, architects, and businesses in UK cities for over 30 years. She has a blend of local authority and private sector experience.

Shelagh is a design review panel member for ‘Places Matter’ and occasionally teaches in higher education, undertakes consultancy work as well as a regular judge on construction and property awards. She has written and undertaken research for think tanks, academic institutions, developers, construction and architecture companies and local authorities.

Shelagh trained as a town planner in the mid 1980s at Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London gaining an MPhil and was the winner of the Holford Travel Award. She also has a postgraduate diploma in Built Environment Research from the University of Salford (2017) and continues academic interests, studying for an MA in Architectural History at University College London.

Shelagh is pro-development, actively involved in contemporary debate about the built environment and believes how building comes about is ‘the ultimate form of human self-expression’. She has travelled independently across Europe and North America – her travel bug was encouraged by working-class parents who never left the country but sent her on educational school trips; the first in 1975 to Romania.
