Sebastian Payne
Whitehall editor, Financial Times; presenter, Payne's Politics; author, Broken Heartlands: a journey through Labour's lost England

Sebastian is the award-winning Whitehall editor for the Financial Times. He writes on British politics and policy, specialising in the Conservative party and the ‘levelling up’ regional agenda. He also writes a fortnightly column for the FT‘s opinion pages on politics outside of Westminster and presents the Payne’s Politics podcast.

His debut book, Broken Heartlands: a journey through Labour’s lost England, was published in September 2021 by Pan Macmillan. It was named book of the week by The Times and the Observer.

Sebastian graduated from Durham University with a BSc in computer science and an MA in investigative journalism from City University London. He grew up in the north of England and lives in London.
