Dr Nicholas Joseph
lecturer, School of Education, University of Derby

Nicholas lectures on a number of programmes within the School of Education at the University of Derby, and has also lectured in history at the University of Keele. Nicholas has edited a forthcoming book, History of Education, due to be published by Routledge in its Education Studies Series.

As assistant programme leader for Derby’s International PGCE programme, he is aware of global angles and complexities in the ‘culture wars’ phenomenon – different ‘culture wars’ are waged in different places for different reasons. Teachers in an international context are required to negotiate intersecting planes of cultural conflict, which are themselves underpinned by conflicting values and assumptions. Nicholas argues that one observed response to such sometimes dangerous complexity appears to be the development of an overarching culture of compliance. Nicholas does not accept that an attitude of unconditional compliance is the best, or even a safe, response to complexity.
