Lord Meghnad Desai is crossbench peer, becoming a member of the House of Lords in 1991. He is emeritus professor of Economics, LSE and has written many books on economics, but also literary criticism and biography.

He is chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India, in 2008.
