Dr Firat Cengiz
senior lecturer in law, University of Liverpool

Firat is a legal scholar with a special interest in law and economics. Firat has also taught and researched law and gender, and as a result, has directly experienced academic freedom issues arising from the sex-gender conflict. Firat was born just before the 1980 military coup in Turkey and was raised by underground socialist parents who were imprisoned for their political beliefs. Her upbringing and early experiences made Firat a fierce defender of the freedom of thought and speech. Firat is a founding member of the Liverpool branch of Academics for Academic Freedom.
