Professor Anders C Hansen

Anders C Hansen is professor of mathematics at the University of Cambridge, where he leads the Applied Functional and Harmonic Analysis Group. He is also a Royal Society University Research fellow, and a fellow of Peterhouse.
Anders has written extensively about the foundations of computational mathematics. He is the instigator of a research programme on the mathematics of the Solvability Complexity Index Hierarchy, which has strong links to Smale’s 18th problem on the limits of AI (from Stephen Smale’s list of mathematical problems for the 21st century).
Anders has given many public lectures on computation and AI, at events including the Cambridge Festival and the National Academy of Sciences Colloquia. He has featured in popular science magazines including Quanta, Physics World and IEEE Spectrum.
He has been awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Mathematics and Statistics (in 2017), the IMA Prize in Mathematics and its Applications (in 2018), and the Whitehead Prize in Mathematics (in 2019). His book Compressive Imaging: structure, sampling, learning (written with Ben Adcock) was a finalist in the ‘Computing and Information Sciences’ category, at the 2022 PROSE Awards held by the Association of American Publishers.
